ISLAMABAD: A delegation of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) led by former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on Sunday met with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman to discuss the way forward in the aftermath of the general elections.
Both parties also discussed the electoral process and agreed that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should resign over the handling of the general elections.
However, the PPP was adamant that it would not boycott parliament. Gilani, while speaking to journalists after the meeting, said the party has decided to sit in the opposition in the centre.
The meeting also decided that the election defeat and rigging allegations would be discussed in the next parliament. However, Maulana Rehman said that decision in the regard would be made soon, while Gilani said that they would raise their voice in the parliament.
PPP leaders Khursheed Shah, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Sherry Rehman, Naveed Qamar and Qamar-uz-Zaman Kaira were also part of the PPP delegation.
PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has formed the committee to engage with political parties in the wake of general elections to discuss the way forward.
Bilawal had expressed reservation over the elections but said that he would not boycott parliament and show the real opposition to the PTI.
Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman had convened a multi-party conference which had rejected the election results. The PPP had stayed away from the conference which called for not taking an oath to express their reservations.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif had also attended the meeting but had also shied away from boycotting parliament.
