ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police on Monday issued driving licence to a transgender person after conducting all driving tests.
Ali Layla became the first transgender person in the federal capital who has been issued a driving license.
Later, Islamabad Inspector General of Police Muhammad Amir Zulfiqar met Layla and vowed that the problems of transgender community would be solved on a priority basis, the police spokesperson said.
“My father taught me driving in the year 2000 and since then I’ve driving a vehicle”, Layla said, adding it was a landmark step that will pave way for other transgender community members to get licences.
In a historic and unprecedented step, the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had issued driving licences to 15 transgender persons in March this year. The government was widely hailed for its decision.
