RAWALPINDI: A special customs court here on Saturday issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of model Ayyan Ali in a currency smuggling case.
Customs Court Judge Arshad Hussain Bhutta directed customs officials to arrest the absconding accused and present her in court on Oct 22.
A junior counsel, Syed Iqbal Hussain, appeared before the court on behalf of Sardar Latif Khosa, who is representing Ayyan Ali in the case.
The counsel said that Ayyan was unable to appear in court today owing to her ill-health and pleaded that she be granted exemption from personal appearance.
The judge asked the lawyer if he had any new medical certificate to back his claim up and observed that exemption couldn’t be granted on the basis of old medical reports.
The customs prosecutor opposed the plea for exemption and requested that the court may issue non-bailable arrest warrants for the suspect.
Ayyan Ali has been in the media limelight since March 2016 when authorities, acting on a tip-off, nabbed her at the VIP lounge of Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Islamabad on money laundering charges before she could board a flight to Dubai.
It is worth mentioning here that under Pakistani laws, a citizen is barred to carry over $10,000 on a flight. However, the authorities had found $506,800 tucked in her luggage.
She was released on bail in July last year and her lawyer said she had no intention to take money outside Pakistan.
