Body of Karachi woman killed for ‘honour’ exhumed

KARACHI: Police on Wednesday exhumed the body of woman who was reportedly killed for honour by her in-laws last month in Karachi’s Sachal Goth area, ARY News reported.

The woman named Safdana was killed on August 28 in Bhittaiabad area of Karachi by her in-laws after they saw her talking to a neighbour. The murder was done in connivance with deceased’s family.

Additional Police Surgeon Iqrar Abbasi conducted the postmortem and revealed that the woman was tortured before being shot seven times in different parts of her body. Police had sought permission from a court hearing the case for exhumation of the body which was granted.

Earlier today, a team from Airport police station reached the graveyard and exhumed the body of the deceased.

Police say the woman was taken to her father-in-law’s dera (a place for gathering) after in-laws saw her talking to neighbour, adding that the two families had agreed upon killing her in the name of honour.

The woman was then buried in the Super Highway graveyard by her maternal family.

Four suspects including the deceased’s father-in-law were arrested two days ago while police is conducting raids to arrest the woman’s maternal uncle and a cousin in the case.

According to statistics, some 500 women are killed every year in Pakistan at the hands of family members over perceived damage to ‘honour’.

A joint session of the Parliament had already unanimously approved anti-honour killing and anti-rape bills moved by PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar back in 2016.
