KARACHI: Police’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) on Friday claimed to have arrested at least two people related to the suicide bomber allegedly involved in the July 13 Mastung attack, ARY News reported.
According to ARY News correspondent Salman Lodhi, CTD officials, on a tip off, arrested the father and brother of the suicide bomber behind the deadly attack from Karachi’s Banaras area.
CTD officials say the father-son duo were about to leave for Afghanistan through a bus and were arrested on their way to a bus station.
The suspects identified as Shiraz and Wali Ahmed were trained in Afghanistan and are also involved in terrorists activities in Pakistan.
Most of their family members had fled to Afghanistan in the year 2016, the CTD officials added.
At least 149 people including Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) candidate Nawabzada Siraj Raisani were killed when a suicide blast ripped through a crowd at a political rally in Mastung on July 13.
Six days after the blast, police announced that man behind the suicide bombing has been identified as Hafeez Nawaz. He was a resident of Mirpur Sakro, 33km away from Thatta.
The attack was the most lethal since Taliban militants assaulted a school in the northwestern city of Peshawar in 2014, killing over 150 people, mostly children, and one of the deadliest in Pakistan’s long struggle with militancy.
