PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, on Wednesday, elected PTI candidate Mushtaq Ghani as the Speaker of the House.
Mushtaq Ghani garnered 83 votes and beat his opponent Laiq Muhammad Khan who managed to receive only 27 votes.
Mushtaq Ghani later took oath of his office and resumed the assembly session for the election of deputy speaker.
Earlier today, the voting process commenced for the top slots in the assembly. PTI’s candidate Mushtaq Ghani and Laiq Muhammad Khan, the nominee of opposition alliance, were vying for the seat of Speaker. While Jamshed Mohmand, candidate of opposition parties, are competing against Mehmood Jan of PTI for the position of deputy speaker.
On Monday, newly elected members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly took their oath duringthe inaugural session of provincial legislature.
Acting KP Assembly Speaker Sardar Aurangzeb Nalota administered the oath to the MPAs.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) tally in the provincial assembly has reached 82 after clinching 16 reserved seats for women and minorities.
Last week, the ECP notified the allotment of the reserved seats for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
The Muttahida Majli-e-Amal (MMA) and Awami National Party (ANP) won two reserved seats each while the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) grabbed one seat each.
The PTI, which won a second term in the July 25 elections, nominated Mehmood Khan, an MPA from PK-9 Swat-VIII, as its candidate for the slot of the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
