DHAKA: Bangladesh’s newly appointed Test captain has been ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka, it was confirmed on Saturday (January 27).
He sustained an injury in his left hand during the tri-series final against Sri Lanka and was forced to leave the field.
Bangladesh Cricket Board officials confirmed Shakib now has several stitched on his left hand and won’t take any further part in the final. There was however no damage to the bone on the finger. “The x-ray didn’t reveal any fracture,” BCB’s senior physician Dr. Debashis Chowdhury said.
“However, there is subluxation/joint sprain at the base of the little finger on his left hand. He has been assessed by a cosmetic surgeon and necessary repairs have been done. The affected finger will have to be immobilized for at least a week before further assessment is made which means he is out of the first Test in Chittagong.” With Shakib ruled out, Mahmudullah will take over the captaincy responsibilities. The first Test will be played from January 31 to February 4 in Chittagong.
