KARACHI: Ahmed Baig, the rising star of Pakistan golf, made the biggest splash of his career yet when he won the Qatar Open Amateur Championship in Doha on saturday.
The young Ahmed, who won the Pakistan leg of the Faldo Cup in Karachi earlier this month, was in terrific form in the Qatar Open played over 54 holes, winning it on the final hole with a superb birdie. He was tied with professional Joshua White till the 17th hole of the final round but managed a birdie on the par-5 18th to win the title.
The 19-year-old began the three-day tournament with 73 but recorded sub-par scores of 70 apiece in the next two rounds to win the prestigious crown. He finished with an aggregate of 213 (-3).
Ahmed was part of a four-member Pakistan team which represented the country in the Qatar Open. But while he was in his element, his other three compatriots were unable to make their presence felt.
Peshawar’s Taimoor Khan finished on the joint 7th place with scores of 72,74,73 (+3). He was followed by Saqib Tufail (+17) and Zohaib Asif (+19).
