KARACHI: The heat wave condition will continue in Karachi till Friday (today) with maximum temperature likely to range in 40-42 Celsius, the weather department said in its alert.

The hot conditions would ease out from Saturday (tomorrow) with a decrease of daytime temperature by 2-3 Centigrade, the Heat Wave Early Warning Centre said in its forecast.

The north/northwest-directed wind flow of 08-12kts is likely to dominate today and from tomorrow onward gradually return to west/southwest, the weather update said.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted mainly hot and dry weather in most parts of the country, while very hot in south Punjab and Sindh.

The met office recorded maximum temperature at Mithi, Jaccobabad, Chhor, Lasbella with 43°C, Mirpur Khas and Shaheed Benazirabad 42°C on Thursday.

The low pressure in the Arabian Sea hampers routine sea breeze to the city during the heat wave and hot and dry winds could blow from north and northwest, the heat wave warning centre said.

The weather department advised the citizens, civic authorities and all stakeholders to take precautionary measures.

Heat Waver precautionary measures

Amid extreme hot weather, emergency has been declared at hospitals besides heatstroke centres have been set up in Karachi after the weather warning.

Medical experts advised citizens to avoid unnecessarily leaving homes in extreme sunlight and hot weather.

If you have no other alternative but to venture outside to run an errand, try to wear a hat and sunglasses. A hat is the best form of head covering which not only protects your head and scalp from the heat but also your brows.

It was also advised to provide immediate initial medical treatment to the affected person of heatstroke by pouring cold water after lying him to a shaded place before taking to a hospital.

Make sure that not only do you drink ample amounts of water and maintain a healthy water intake (such as 8 glasses daily) but also eat foods which contain sufficient water in them. Examples could include juicy fruits such as watermelon, grapes, mangoes or salads etc, the medics advised.
