LAHORE: A resolution pertaining to banning dowry was submitted in the Punjab Assembly on Saturday, ARY News reported.
According to details, lawmaker from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Uzma Zahid Bukhari put forth a resolution demanding an end on dowry, and calling to set its specific limit on a state level.
“There is no concept of a menace like dowry in Islam,” the resolution noted seeking an action against all those who ask for it.
It is pertinent to mention that Khyber Pakhtunkhawa assembly passed a bill against the dowry and excessive spending over wedding ceremonies.
The legislation restricted bride’s family from gifting anything above Rs 0.1 million worth.
The law also imposes a fine of Rs 0.3 million or three months imprisonment for asking dowry. Further, if a gift given by the groom, is forced to be returned then the violator will face a punishment of up to three months or a fine of Rs. 0.2 million.
Last year, the Women Development Department brought Sindh Dowry Act 2017 draft for discussion, proposing that the extravagant dowry, presents and bridal gifts in marriage should be fixed at Rs50,000.
However, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah opposed the bill, saying that the law proposed would be difficult to implement if passed by the assembly
