KARACHI: Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) South Javed Alam Odho on Thursday constituted a special team to investigate the targeted killing of former Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Ali Raza Abidi.
According to a notification, a team headed by SSP South Pir Muhammad Shah and comprising six other police officials will probe the murder case. It has been tasked to bring the culprits behind the killing of the former MNA to justice at the earliest.
A day earlier, investigators probing the incident claimed to have found a lead in the case as it has been found that one of the weapons used in the murder of Abidi was earlier used in the killing of a trader in Liaquatabad.
Abidi was shot dead on Tuesday by armed men on a motorcycle when he got off from his car outside his house in Khayaban-e-Ghazi in Defence Housing Authority (DHA).
A first information report of the murder has been registered with the Gizri police station on a complaint of Ikhlaq Abidi, father of the slain former lawmaker. Sections of murder and terrorism have been incorporated in the case, said a police official.
During his informal talk with newsmen after lodging the FIR, Ikhlaq said he can identify the faces of the assailants who shot dead his son. “I ran towards the main gate of the house soon after hearing gunshots,” he said.
