ISLAMABAD: US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Alice Wells, on Wednesday left for the United after States after a two-day visit to Pakistan in which she met officials of the Finance and Foreign ministries, ARY News reported
Reports were going rounds that the senior US diplomat will also meet the top leadership of Pakistan, however it was later reported that the government decided to follow the protocol and arranged a delegation level meeting of Ms Wells with officials of the two ministries.
During the meeting, Pakistan and the United States agreed to continue efforts to promote the shared objectives of peace and stability in the region and diversify bilateral relations.
The Pakistani side emphasized the need to diversify the relationship with particular focus on enhanced economic and trade cooperation and people to people contacts.
The US delegation appreciated the need to strengthen the bilateral relationship with Pakistan which was an important country of the region.
The meeting also took stock of the understanding reached between Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to rebuild the relationship based on mutual trust and respect.
Evolving regional situation and peace and stability in Afghanistan were also discussed.
During his visit to Washington, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met US President Donald Trump at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Qureshi said he had the opportunity to discuss Pak-US relations with Mr. Trump. I requested him that we have had cordial relations and need to rebuild them,” he said while speaking to a state-owned TV after the meeting.
