ISLAMABAD/DELHI: Prime Minister Imran Khan has written a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking resumption of dialogue between the two countries at the UN General Assembly meet later this month in New York.
In his letter, Khan asked the PM Modi to green light a meeting between external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the UN meet, the Times of India reported.
Khan’s letter is the first formal proposal of bilateral dialogue since he formed the government in Pakistan last month. It came in response to PM Modi’s own letter on August 20 which conveyed that New Delhi was looking for constructive and meaningful engagement with Islamabad.

The PM had noted that India was committed to peaceful neighbourly ties with Pakistan, the report quotes sources as saying.
The two nations have not had any substantial dialogue since 2015 when Swaraj had travelled to Islamabad for Heart of Asia conference. The ties between the two countries had strained after terror attacks in India in 2016.
Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal on Wednesday said no formal communications have so far been held between Islamabad and New Delhi over opening of Kartarpur Corridor, but Pakistan is open on this issue.
During a weekly briefing, he said no meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Shusma Swaraj has yet been finalized. However, talks in this regard are continuing.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had telephoned Imran Khan on July 30 over Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) landslide victory in July 25 general elections.
According to PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry, the Indian premier greeted the PTI chief Imran Khan over his party’s victory and expressed hope that his tenure will usher both the countries into an era of peace and prosperity.
“Both Imran Khan and Modi agreed upon resolving all outstanding issues between the two countries through dialogue,” Fawad Chaudhry added.
