LAHORE: India’s prominent peace and human rights activist and senior journalist, Kuldip Nayar, passed away two weeks ago and cremated in New Delhi. But his ashes will be immersed in a river near Lahore.
The ashes of prominent peace and human rights activist and senior Indian journalist, Kuldip Nayar, would be immersed in the River Ravi near Lahore after a ceremony in which a sapling would be planted at the Government College University Lahore in September, said a statement issued by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education & Research (PILER) on Friday
According to Pakistan Institute of Labour Education & Research (PILER), the ashes were brought in Pakistan by Pakistani peace activists including Karamat Ali, Haya Eman Zahid, Altaf Khoso advocate and others.
The activists visited India and attended a roundtable conference on the issue of Pakistan-India prisoners at the India Islamic Cultural Centre, New Delhi on August 31, 2018.
Nayar was born in Sialkot in Pakistan in 1923, began his career in journalism with the Urdu press and went on to serve as editor of several newspapers, including Indian Express and The Statesman. He was arrested during the Emergency. He fought fiercely for press freedom and civil liberties and to improve ties between India and Pakistan.
In 2008, the ashes of Nirmala Deshpande, an Indian peace and human rights activist, were immersed in the Indus River at the steps of the Sadhu Bela temple Sukkur, Sindh. It was her desire that her ashes be immersed in the South Asian river.
