KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly, on Wednesday, elected PPP’s Agha Siraj Durrani for a second consecutive term as the Speaker of the House.
Agha Siraj garnered 96 votes and beat his opponent Javed Hanif from opposition alliance who managed to receive 59 votes.
PPP’s leader later took oath of his office and chaired the assembly session for the election of deputy speaker.
Earlier today, the voting process commenced for the top slot in the assembly as PPP maintained a decisive lead of 97 members in the House.
On the other hand, PPP’s Rehana Leghari and Rabia Azfar of PTI are vying for the seat of deputy speaker.
The Pakistan Peoples Party, which won a third consecutive term in Sindh, nominated Mr Durrani as the provincial legislature’s speaker for the second time.
On Monday, newly elected members of the Sindh Assmebly took oath at the provincial legislature’s first session.
Out of 130 general seats in the Sindh Assembly, the Election Commission of Commission has notified the results of 127 seats as the results of two seats has been withheld, while the election on PS-87 (Malir-I) was not held owing the death of a candidate.
The PPP has 97 seats in the provincial legislature, which included 17 reserved seats for women and five for minorities.
It is in a comfortable position to form the government without the support of any other party.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has emerged the second largest party in the 168-house by bagging 30 general seats while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) stood third with 21 seats.
The Grand Democratic Alliance’s tally in the legislature stood at 13, including two seats for women and one for minorities.
The Tehreek Labbaik Pakistan and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal clinched two and one seats, respectively.
